Saving money on heating can be easy, and doesn’t require you to have the technical know-how of one of our expert boiler engineers. Sometimes it could be as easy as nudging your thermostat down by one or two degrees.
Before you get into anything else you should make sure your home is being heated as efficiently as possible. If your boiler is old or hasn’t been treated to regular maintenance, it could be using too much fuel to produce the heat you’re asking for.
Having your boiler serviced annually by one of our experts is a great way to ensure it’s ticking over as it should. However if your boiler is a particularly old model, you may want to think about upgrading to a newer, more energy efficient model which could save you money in the long run.
Aside from having a boiler you can rely on, there are several things you can do every day, to try and cut down your heating bills and potentially save on costs.
It’s easy to have a bit of a trigger finger when it comes to the thermostat, nudging it up every time you feel a slight chill. However, by keeping the room’s temperature just one or two degrees lower than normal, you might be able to save money over the year.
You could also try putting on an extra layer of clothing or snuggling up under a blanket instead.
If you’re using the oven, try to cook multiple meals at once, when possible. You could save money by only using the oven for half the usual time.
Your gas and electric bill isn’t always set in stone – you can try to save money by hunting down a better deal whenever you get the chance. Comparison sites have obviously made this chore a little easier. Simply go to your favourite and see which provider can give you the best prices.
While this is particularly effective during the summer months as opposed to during winter, whenever the sun is beaming outside, open the curtains wide and let it shine in.
This natural source of heat should allow you to warm up your home a little without having to spend a single penny.
While home improvements can be pricey, they may save you money in the long run. And there are currently some government grants in place to help you to make your home more energy efficient, if you’re deemed eligible. That same help extends to grants for boilers as well.
Cavity wall insulation and loft insulation are two of the main home improvements you can make to stop as much heat escaping through the walls and roof of your home. If you can keep the heat inside, you hopefully won’t have to touch the thermostat as often.
Following our tips above could not only save you money on your heating bill but also benefit the environment too. We also have advice for lowering your whole energy bill, not just saving on heating costs. And on how you can make sure your house is using gas and electricity efficiently.
